In this Review

The Jasper Mastercard can help working professionals to establish a credit history. It is ideal for new immigrants awaiting their Social Security number as they start their new job in the US. Many card issuers require a Social Security number immediately, but Jasper is one of the few exceptions. You’ll have 60 days after account activation to report your Social Security number. Additionally, Jasper does not solely rely on traditional credit factors to evaluate applicants.

The company states it assesses over 360 data points to determine applicant creditworthiness. This includes whether the applicant has secured a job offer, their online presence and debt to income ratio.

Despite this flexibility, you may be eligible for a up to a $5,000 credit limit. This is incredibly high for those new to US credit. Additionally, the fee structure is extremely attractive. There is no annual fee, no penalty APRs if you miss or make a late payment.

The Jasper Mastercard also allows you to earn 1% to 6% on eligible purchases. You can increase your cash back percentage by referring friends. The base rate is set at 1%, but you’ll get an additional 0.5% per year for each successful referral, up to the maximum 6%.

You’ll earn cash back providing your account is in good standing. The cash back is only locked if your account is past due.

The card is also well equipped for overseas travel. There are no foreign transaction fees and it has broad international acceptance as a Mastercard. This makes it a great option for frequent travelers that could incur as much as a 3% fee per transaction with many other credit cards.

The Jasper Mastercard allows you to manage your account via a dedicated app. The company communicates with customers via email and push notifications with the aim to help teach people how to work with the credit system in the US. So, as long as you have a compatible smartphone or device, you can easily manage your account 24/7.

Benefits

If you’re new to the US and are currently awaiting your Social Security number, you can still go ahead and apply for a Jasper Mastercard.

Your number is not required during the application process and you’ll have 60 days after activating your card to submit your number.

In addition to no annual fee, the Jasper Mastercard has no penalty APR. This means that you won’t attract a higher interest rate if you’re late making a payment or you miss a payment.

There are even no foreign transaction fees, which could save you up to 3% per transaction compared to other cards.

The company has numerous ways to assess your qualification for a Jasper Mastercard, rather than simply relying on a credit score. The company states it considers over 360 data points to assess creditworthiness.

Unlike many cards, the application process for the Reflex Mastercard is quite simple. You can receive an answer to your application within seconds. In the event that you don’t qualify for the card, you’ll be offered a secured card and provide a detailed explanation of why your application was denied.

ou can earn up to 6% cash back on your eligible purchases. What makes the Jasper Mastercard a little different from many others is that you can earn an increase in your cash back rate by referring friends. The base rate is 1%, but you’ll get 0.5% more for one year for each successful referral.

Drawbacks

Jasper only reports your account information to two of the three major credit bureaus. This means that your card activity will not help you to build an Experian credit score. This could be a major drawback for someone who is looking to establish a solid credit score across the board.

Many cards offer instant approval, but this is not the case with the Jasper Mastercard. It takes approximately three business days from application to receiving the approval decision. There may even be scenarios where your application takes even longer.

Although the Jasper Mastercard does not charge a balance transfer fee, there is no introductory rate. A low or 0% APR intro rate is usually an attractive feature for those looking to transfer a balance from another card.

Another potential downside is that you can only manage your Jasper Mastercard account via the Jasper app. You can’t access your account information using a desktop computer.

So, if you don’t have a compatible smartphone or mobile device, you will not be able to properly manage your account.

The card appears to be marketed to those who are new to the US awaiting their social security number.

Although it can assist those people, if you are already in the US and simply want to build your credit, there are cards with more generous rewards on the market.

Bottom Line

The Jasper Mastercard is a great option for those who don’t yet have their Social Security number, but want to start building their credit. You have 60 days after activating your account to submit your social security number.

Jasper does not rely on a credit history to make an approval decision. So, if you’re new to the US, it can provide a way to establish your credit and gain access to an impressive credit limit.

However, Jasper does not report your account activity to all three major credit bureaus. So, if you’re looking to establish an Experian credit rating, this is not the card for you.

Additionally, if you’re already established in the US and simply want to build your credit, there are options that provide a more comprehensive reward package.

Credit Card Reviews Methodology

In order to determine the best possible credit cards, we look at things like fees, interest rates and rewards. We do this with companies that are associated with us as partners as well as other offerings. From there, we make a decision about what the best card is related to different categories and needs. We focus on interest rate cost & fees, especially the cost of carrying a balance, rewards – cards accumulate rewards in different currencies—points, miles, cash back—and their values vary widely usability – cards that accept a wide range of credit profiles and offer simple solutions for things like checking your credit score or contacting. We also consider customer reviews.

We look at cards related to good or excellent credit ratings that will then provide a range of different benefits and improvements for someone who has these scores. We also look at low fees when it comes to those who have lower credit scores.
