GEICO Car Insurance Review

GEICO is the second-largest auto insurance provider in the United States. It’s also available in all 50 states and rates highly among several different studies. You aren’t required to work with an agent when you use GEICO and you can handle most of your auto business online, on your own.

However, it’s good to keep in mind that while other providers provide gap insurance, GEICO does not. It also may be tricky to find a local agent if you need one and not all coverage can be found through every partner. Their website makes it extremely easy to get a quote as it’s the first thing you see when you go there. GEICO takes you through an easy-to-follow process to help you find your estimated rate.

Despite these setbacks, GEICO provides rideshare coverage for Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare operators as well as mechanical breakdown coverage. They also provide discounts for a variety of reasons including, being a good student, a safe driver, and policy bundling.

They also have a safe driving tracker app that can bring you more discounts, but it’s only available in certain states. When it comes to auto claims satisfaction, GEICO rated below average by J.D. Power.

Basic Coverage

The auto insurance offered by GEICO includes:

  • Property damage: This coverage comes in for damages made to properties due to accidents caused by you
  • Bodily injury: This covers damages for death or bodily injuries due to accidents caused by you.
  • Personal Injury Protection: This covers accident-related expenses, lost wages, or medical treatments, regardless of who caused the accident.
  • Medical Payments: This covers medical expenses caused by a car accident.
  • Comprehensive: This coverage pays for damages caused to your car due to storms, vandalism, theft, etc
  • Collision: This covers damages to your car when it is hit, or it hit by an object or another vehicle

Other coverage offered by GEICO insurance includes:

  • Rental Reimbursement: This pays some fraction of costs required to rent a car if you have need of renting a car pending the repair of yours due to a covered claim.
  • Emergency Road Service: This helps you get the required roadside assistance for just $14 yearly per vehicle. In contrast to some insurance companies that require payment for services offered, towing coverage is added to your GEICO roadside assistance.
  • Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI): Rather than purchase the extended warranty of your car manufacturer, you can buy the MBI of GEICO for leased or new cars that are below 15 months old and covered below 15,000 miles.  After a deductible of $200 on a covered loss, Mechanical breakdown insurance stands in for all the car’s mechanical parts (asides the usual wear and tear and maintenance).

A similar program – WarrantyDirect is offered by progressive, but this is delivered via a 3rd party and only older vehicles qualify. However, it seems more expensive.

How to File a Claim

Filing a claim can be done online through the company’s mobile app, or just contacting a claims representative.

To begin, you have to provide your name, as well as your policy number, and other information telling the company why you have decided to file a claim, and details based on the required coverage.  If your vehicle is okay and can be driven, within 24 hours, the insurer will fix a time to get it to the repair shop to get the right estimate.

Depending on how severe the situation is, your claim is likely to be settled within 48 hours.

Here are some advantages as well as some disadvantages of working with GEICO car insurance:

GEICO offers very affordable rates compared to other insurance companies in a variety of categories. Overall, GEICO is one of the cheapest companies in the US.

The mobile app of GEICO was highly rated during the Dynatrace Mobile Insurance Scorecard that took place during the 1st quarter of 2019. The app can perform several functions, such as reporting an auto claim, paying of bills, accessing Gabby (the virtual assistant of GEICO) for help, and accessing digital insurance cards.

Several discounts are given in GEICO, which helps in reducing your insurance premiums, which include multi-policy discounts, student driver discounts, military discounts, senior driver discounts, and good-driver discounts.

This serves as a comprehensive and more robust extended warranty. This insurance is a must for new cars that have been known to be unreliable.

With gap insurance, the difference between the actual value of your car and what is owed on it is covered; this can only happen if the car is stolen, or it is totaled in an accident. However, GEICO has failed to offer this insurance.

When you have accident forgiveness, you will be protected from increases on the premium rate because it is your first time at fault for an accident. However, this is not available in all states.

Though GEICO has some insurance agents, they are far fewer in number when compared to those of other competitors because it only focuses on customers making their purchases online.

GEICO has failed to offer some important coverage options like gap insurance and new car replacement.

Auto Insurance Discounts

GEICO Auto Insurance provides amazing discounts to suit different budgets:

DiscountHow do you receive it?
Airbag discountWith this, you can save 40% for airbags at the full-front seat and 25% for airbags at the driver side. This discount also deals with personal injury protection or medical payment.
Anti-theft systemWith an anti-theft system in your vehicle, you are entitled to 25% off the portion of your premium
New vehicle discountThree model years old cars or newer have a chance to get a 15% discount on some coverages.
Daytime running lightsVehicles having daytime running lights stand a chance of getting a 1% discount on some coverages.
Anti-lock brakes discountWith an anti-lock brake system installed, you will get a discount of 5% from your collision premium.

Geico is not a cut price insurance provider, but the company does have a reputation for low cost auto insurance. Geico can supply low rates as it offers basic no frills policies. However, you can opt for add ons to tailor your coverage, while keeping the rate reasonable.

Geico car insurance coverage is available throughout the US. However, coverage options and policy details can vary according to your home state or territory. The Geiko team can advise you of the mandatory coverage requirements in your state and help tailor your coverage to suit your needs.

Geico offers a great balance of low rates and great coverage options. The company also offers a number of discounts to further reduce your insurance rates. Additionally, Geico offers solid customer support to manage policy details or assist with the claims process. Review comments highlight that many policyholders have had a positive experience with the Geico claims department, which is not common with many lower cost insurers.

Geico is considered to be a great option for low cost car insurance throughout the US. However, The General has a limited coverage area operating in just 10 states. This means that Geico is far more accessible.

Additionally, while The General specializes in offering policies for drivers with infractions or credit issues, they tend to be higher priced if you have a lower risk profile. So, unless you are in a very high risk group and in The General’s coverage area, you are likely to find a better deal with Geico.

Geico is considered to offer low cost car insurance, making it an appealing option. Geico also has coverage across the US, which is another advantage. However, while Geico does have a variety of available discounts, Erie also offers great rates and myriad discounts.

Where Erie has the advantage over Geico is the ability to rate lock. If you add this to your policy, you don’t need to worry about premium increases at renewal time. So, Erie is the better option over Geico.

Like Geico, Liberty Mutual operates across the US, providing access to its products and services across all 50 states. However, Liberty Mutual is certainly not the cheapest option on the market. This is a large insurance provider that markets to those looking for more comprehensive coverage. This does mean that you can get a lot more extras included in your policy.

However, if you’re looking for the most cost effective solution that meets your car insurance needs, Geico is likely to be the better option for you.

Like State Farm, Geico has coverage across the US. So, you can access products and services in all 50 states. While Geico has a reputation for low cost auto insurance, State Farm is considered one of the cheapest providers on the market. You can enjoy competitive rates even if you are a new driver or have a driving record with violations. This gives State Farm the edge over Geico as the better option for your car insurance needs.

However, if you’re looking for the most cost effective solution that meets your car insurance needs, Geico is likely to be the better option for you.

Here are our 2 choices of car insurance companies which can use as a great alternative to GEICO:

You can take advantage of quite a lot of bundling options with Nationwide that you won’t easily find with other insurance firms. Nationwide is great for you if you have a spotless driving record as you will be treated to some of the cheapest rates available. However, if your driving history has some blemish, you might want to look elsewhere for coverage. Seniors will find this company more appealing than youngers as rates tend to get cheaper the older you get.

Travelers offers the staple insurance products along with some coverage add-ons. While it is true that the rates are quite high when compared to other leading policy providers, the discounts offered by the insurer make the prices competitive. If you are a safe driver, Travelers will prove to be a worthwhile insurance provider – however, if you don't have a clean motoring record, this company might not be so favorable – it is better you look for coverage elsewhere.

Car Insurance Companies Review – Methodology

Our expert review team gathers data from many auto insurance providers in order to create rankings of the top insurers. Each company receives a score from each category, along with a overall weighted score of 5.0 stars.

Financial Stability: The highest score in this category goes to insurers with high financial ratings and customer-first practices. Although insurance marketplaces do not have financial strength ratings they can still be useful tools for drivers who are looking for premiums at competitive rates. If you are looking for an insurer that doesn’t underwrite your policies, be sure to check the rating of the partner company.

Coverage: The rating is based upon the types of insurance that are available, their maximum coverage limits and any add-on policies. We also consider exclusions that are applicable to certain drivers.

Cost and Discounts: We review auto insurance rates estimates for many drivers across every state. The best scores are awarded to companies that offer lower rates and have many discount options for car insurance. You can lower your insurance premium by qualifying for any driver discounts. Car insurance companies often offer discounts up to 25%-35% for eligible policyholders.

The discount percentages offered vary depending on where you live and some companies restrict the amount of discounts that can be applied to your premium. We looked at the discounts offered in the various companies that we reviewed. Many allow you to combine different insurance policies to save on premiums. There are many savings options for drivers shopping for car insurance. These include discounts based on the type of car, profession, driving record, and other factors. Companies that offer a variety of options could lead to a lower premium for drivers were favored by us.

Customer Service: We review customer feedback and reviews from J.D. Power. Data such as market share, complaints to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners for private passenger car insurance (2020) and overall ratio of those complaints to the industry average.

We took into account parameters such as companies mobile apps, advanced online services, and telematics make it easier for auto insurers to respond to consumer needs. Many providers offer support via phone, email and agents. Some even offer live chat and 24/7 support via phone, email, or mobile app, while some provide social media responsiveness during weekends and after-hours hours.
