Mercury Auto Insurance Review

Mercury insurance offers auto insurance, home insurance, business insurance, renters insurance, and umbrella insurance packages. Mercury is mostly known for its auto insurance services. Though its primary customer base is in California, it also renders some of its additional insurance services in 10 other states in the US. Asides the Golden State, you can take advantage of Mercury's competitive auto insurance rates if you are in Arizona, New York, Nevada, Texas, Illinois, Georgia, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Florida, or Virginia. 

The company is basic at best in terms of coverage options. You can expect to get products such as liability protection, collision protection, comprehensive coverage, medical payments coverage, personal injury protection (PIP), uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and rental car coverage. 

The additional coverages offered by Mercury auto insurance are roadside assistance and Ride-Hailing Insurance. These products are sold through Mercury's independent agents located in the different states that the company operates.

Benefits

The policy rates are cheaper compared to other competing providers. The quotes you will get when you want to sign up for an auto policy from Mercury are much lower than other insurance providers in the industry.

The company allows you to register over the internet or via phone call.

The company has local offices and agents that you have access to. As long as you are in any state that Mercury is located, you can get access to its network of local, independent agents in those territories.

Mercury provides their customers with the MercuryGo telematics app. It is a usage-based app that charges its customers based on their car usage. Depending on your location, you stand a chance of getting their subscription discount.

Drawbacks

The rental car benefit is only active for a limited amount of time. The company will pay for car rental services if your insured vehicle is undergoing repairs as a result of a covered accident but don't expect it to last as long as the repairs will take.

Repairs on damaged vehicles can take a very long time.

The coverage options are not as much as you'd expect. When compared to the best auto insurance providers, Mercury doesn't offer as many options for customers.

It is not available all over the country. The auto insurer is only available in 11 states in the US.

Mercury is only available in 11 states, which means you must live in one of these states to insure your car with them. Mercury's 24/7 customer service for filing claims and responding to customer inquiries is possibly their distinguishing feature.

While this service has aided in the handling of claims, there have been some complaints about settlement responses and drivers requesting an easier method of filing claims.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Mercury had almost the expected amount of complaints for an auto insurance company.

According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been about 133 customer complaints in the past three years, and the customer reviews rating stands at two stars out of 5. However, the BBB rating for the company is A+. 

The 2020 Financial Strength Rating of Mercury Auto Insurance stands at an A- according to AM Best. The Mercury General Corporation, a publicly-traded company (and parent of Mercury Auto Insurance), has over $4.5 billion in total assets. 

Basic Coverage

Mercury offers the following products as an auto insurer: 

  • Liability Protection: Pays for damages against others if you're at fault in an accident and attorney fees if sued.
  • Collision Protection: Pays for damages to your car in an accident, regardless of who is at fault.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: This is a more holistic policy that covers your vehicle.
  • Personal Injury Protection: Covers medical bills and other costs after an accident regardless of who caused the accident.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists Coverage: This is for accidents caused by underinsured or uninsured motorists. It covers any bodily injuries on you, your drivers, and passengers in your insured car.
  • Rental Car: Pays for car rental services if your insured car is involved in a covered loss.

Extras

Mercury doesn't have as many extras as you might expect for car coverage. Here are the additional coverages you can include in an existing policy with the company. 

  • Medical Payment Coverage: You can add this to an active coverage to help pay for any medical fees arising from a covered loss.
  • Roadside Assistance: With this 24/7 coverage, Mercury will send a roadside service professional to help fix your car in the event of a breakdown.
  • Ride-Hailing Insurance: This is for Uber, Lyft, and other ride-hailing services' drivers, and it covers you and your car while your ride-hailing app is on, but you haven't got any passengers.

Next, you will be required to fill in the Year, Make, Model, and Body Style of your car. You can choose that option or enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). When you're done, click on “Add Vehicle”. You might need to enter some other information here, fill them as appropriate.

How to File a Claim?

In the event of a car collision, you will need to call the company on its Claims Hotline at (800) 503-3724. This is the only possible way to start filing a claim. 

When you call the insurer, the claims team will kick off the claims process and explain any necessary steps. To make your claims as fast as possible, you will need the following information to file your claim:

Mercury Insurance is based in California and offers insurance in just 11 states. In addition to California, it also operates in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Virginia, Texas and Oklahoma. This insurer is working to expand its availability network.

However, Mercury may not offer the same discounts and services in all those states.

However, Mercury Auto is a budget insurer. So, if you are more concerned with getting the cheapest coverage, with a bare bones policy and you’re in a Mercury Auto covered state, you may find it more appealing.

While Mercury Auto specializes in bare bones, low cost insurance, USAA has a different purpose. Its primary aim is to offer a variety of insurance products to military personnel, veterans and their family members.

So, which option is better will depend on your needs and preferences. If you’re serving in the military or a veteran and need tailored coverage with some nice features, USAA is likely to be the better choice. However, if you are in the market for basic car insurance coverage at a low cost, stick with Mercury Auto.

So, although Liberty Mutual may not be the cheaper option, it certainly offers far more coverage options, so you can find a policy that meets your specific requirements.

While Liberty Mutual offers coverage across all 50 states, Mercury Auto only operates in 11 states. Additionally, Mercury Auto specializes in offering basic coverage, which can be limited for most drivers. This is where Liberty Mutual has the edge over Mercury Auto. This insurer has far more policy options, add ons and innovative features.

So, although Liberty Mutual may not be the cheaper option, it certainly offers far more coverage options, so you can find a policy that meets your specific requirements.

Cost and Discounts: We review auto insurance rates estimates for many drivers across every state. The best scores are awarded to companies that offer lower rates and have many discount options for car insurance. You can lower your insurance premium by qualifying for any driver discounts. 

The discount percentages offered vary depending on where you live and some companies restrict the amount of discounts that can be applied to your premium. We looked at the discounts offered in the various companies that we reviewed. Many allow you to combine different insurance policies to save on premiums. There are many savings options for drivers shopping for car insurance.
