The rental car benefit is only active for a limited amount of time. The company will pay for car rental services if your insured vehicle is undergoing repairs as a result of a covered accident but don't expect it to last as long as the repairs will take.

Repairs on damaged vehicles can take a very long time.

Mercury is only available in 11 states, which means you must live in one of these states to insure your car with them. Mercury's 24/7 customer service for filing claims and responding to customer inquiries is possibly their distinguishing feature.

While this service has aided in the handling of claims, there have been some complaints about settlement responses and drivers requesting an easier method of filing claims.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Mercury had almost the expected amount of complaints for an auto insurance company.

According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been about 133 customer complaints in the past three years, and the customer reviews rating stands at two stars out of 5. However, the BBB rating for the company is A+.

The 2020 Financial Strength Rating of Mercury Auto Insurance stands at an A- according to AM Best. The Mercury General Corporation, a publicly-traded company (and parent of Mercury Auto Insurance), has over $4.5 billion in total assets.

Mercury FAQs

Mercury Insurance is based in California and offers insurance in just 11 states. In addition to California, it also operates in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Virginia, Texas and Oklahoma. This insurer is working to expand its availability network.

However, Mercury may not offer the same discounts and services in all those states.

Mercury is a basic auto insurer offering basic coverage options with some optional coverage add ons such as roadside assistance. You can also use the Mercury mobile app to access your policy details and easily pay your premiums.

So, if you’re looking for a no frills car insurance policy with some nice extras,  Mercury could be a good place for you.

While Mercury Auto has a limited coverage area, Nationwide operates in 46 states. This makes Nationwide more accessible. Additionally, Nationwide has an excellent reputation for dealing with claims promptly. This insurer offers a variety of policy options and add ons, allowing you to create tailored coverage.

However, Mercury Auto is a budget insurer. So, if you are more concerned with getting the cheapest coverage, with a bare bones policy and you’re in a Mercury Auto covered state, you may find it more appealing.

While Mercury Auto specializes in bare bones, low cost insurance, USAA has a different purpose. Its primary aim is to offer a variety of insurance products to military personnel, veterans and their family members.

So, which option is better will depend on your needs and preferences. If you’re serving in the military or a veteran and need tailored coverage with some nice features, USAA is likely to be the better choice. However, if you are in the market for basic car insurance coverage at a low cost, stick with Mercury Auto.

So, although Liberty Mutual may not be the cheaper option, it certainly offers far more coverage options, so you can find a policy that meets your specific requirements.

While Liberty Mutual offers coverage across all 50 states, Mercury Auto only operates in 11 states. Additionally, Mercury Auto specializes in offering basic coverage, which can be limited for most drivers. This is where Liberty Mutual has the edge over Mercury Auto. This insurer has far more policy options, add ons and innovative features.

So, although Liberty Mutual may not be the cheaper option, it certainly offers far more coverage options, so you can find a policy that meets your specific requirements.

Review Auto Insurance Companies

Our expert review team gathers data from many auto insurance providers in order to create rankings and estimate rates.

Financial Stability: We analyzed each company based on industry benchmark ratings (summary table can be seen under “customer satisfaction” section) . Although insurance marketplaces do not have financial strength ratings they can still be useful tools for drivers who are looking for premiums at competitive rates. If you are looking for an insurer that doesn’t underwrite your policies, be sure to check the rating of the partner company.

Coverage: Which types of insurance are available, their maximum coverage limits and any add-on policies. We also consider exclusions that are applicable to certain drivers.

Cost and Discounts: We review auto insurance rates estimates for many drivers across every state. The best scores are awarded to companies that offer lower rates and have many discount options for car insurance. You can lower your insurance premium by qualifying for any driver discounts.

The discount percentages offered vary depending on where you live and some companies restrict the amount of discounts that can be applied to your premium. We looked at the discounts offered in the various companies that we reviewed. Many allow you to combine different insurance policies to save on premiums. There are many savings options for drivers shopping for car insurance. These include discounts based on the type of car, profession, driving record, and other factors. Companies that offer a variety of options could lead to a lower premium for drivers were favored by us.

Customer Service: We review customer feedback and reviews from J.D. Power. Data such as market share, complaints to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners for private passenger car insurance (2021) and overall ratio of those complaints to the industry average.

In order to provide accurate and neutral information to our readers, our expert review team collects data from dozens of car insurance providers. Vehicles used include the 2017 Hyundai Sonata, 2017 Toyota Corolla, with annual mileage ranging from 10,000 and 20,000. We analyzed five credit tiers (excellent, good, very good, fair, and poor) and four types of people in different age groups. Lastly, we divided drivers to 4 categories based on safety history: Clean driving records, one at fault accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI.

We took into account parameters such as companies mobile apps, advanced online services, and telematics make it easier for auto insurers to respond to consumer needs. Many providers offer support via phone, email and agents. Some even offer live chat and 24/7 support via phone, email, or mobile app, while some provide social media responsiveness during weekends and after-hours hours.
